Studies have shown throughout the years that certain areas of Austin, Texas are more likely to see a car accident than the next. City councilmembers have proposed improvements be made to these dangerous areas, but it is unclear when or if those will be made.
The most dangerous intersections in Austin, according to several reports, are:
- West Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road
- Lamar Boulevard and Rundberg Lane
- Lamar Boulevard and Parmer Lane
- U.S. 183 Service Road and Cameron Road
- I-35 Southbound Service Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
All five of the top five most dangerous intersections are close to Interstate-35, which might be indicative of the source of the problem. As drivers get on or off the freeway, they might go into an “autopilot” mode, in which they allow themselves to zone out or become distracted. Some might even start to text and drive after getting off the freeway, ironically feeling safer on the familiar streets while simultaneously creating a hazard for themselves and other motorists around them.
While revisions to the intersections would certainly help, like adding protective medians and adjusting the preexisting lanes, the responsibility of safe driving starts and ends with every single driver in Austin. Please do not allow yourself to be distracted while driving, and certainly never drink and drive. If you see someone driving haphazardly, try to remember the plate number and description of the vehicle, pull over to safe, out-of-the-way location, and dial the sheriff’s office or 911 to report them.
