A Texas food manufacturer, Marina’s German Bakery, has recalled a number of pastry items due to the fact that they may contain nuts; specifically, almonds, walnuts or hazelnuts. These packages aren’t marked as containing the nut products, so someone who is allergic could run the risk of suffering from a dangerous reaction if ingested.
The defective products are in two-count packages and labeled as Marina’s German Bakery Assorted Pastries with sell by dates of Nov. 23, 2013. They were distributed at two military bases at Fort Bliss Commissary in El Paso and at Holloman AFB Commissary in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The FDA discovered the inconsistency between the contents of the product and the labeling and brought it to the manufacturer’s attention. The distributor was unaware of the issue.
There were no reports of people becoming ill due to their consumption of the improperly marked pastries. However, the company has suspended distribution of the products until the labels are updated to reflect the content of nuts. The manufacturer has also asked those who bought the products to return them to the store of purchase in order to receive a full refund.
