A Rhome woman died at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident initiated by a collision between a Freightliner and a semi-truck pulling a box trailer according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The accident, which occurred on State Highway 114 in Denton County on Sept. 8, closed the highway for several hours. The woman, 44, was driving a Hyundai Elantra, and the last vehicle involved in the crash was a Chevrolet Tahoe.
The driver of the Freightliner was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Worth. The driver of the other semi-truck and the Tahoe driver received treatment for their injuries at the accident site.
According to the DPS, the accident happened around 6:45 p.m. near South County Line Road when the Freightliner, which was loaded with rocks, was traveling east on Highway 114 and crossed the centerline into the pathway of the other westbound semi-truck. The Freightliner hit the other truck before crashing into the Hyundai and the Tahoe then overturning. The rocks spilled onto the highway as a result.
Officials said the fatal accident was the third in Denton County in two weeks. Investigations into all three accidents were ongoing as of Sept. 10.
