A crash involving a motorcycle and a passenger car took the life of a man on March 30. The collision occurred at the Osage Drive and U.S. Highway 183 intersection at about 9:30 p.m., resulting in authorities diverting highway traffic for four-and-a-half hours. Leander police say that a 19-year-old male motorcyclist was traveling south on the highway when a 46-year-old northbound driver in a Kia made a left-hand turn in front of him from the center lane. Despite the motorcyclist wearing a helmet, he died from his injuries. The Kia driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at a medical center nearby.
This fatal motorcycle crash was the second of the day in the Austin metro area and the fifth in a week. The incident earlier on March 30 occurred on RM 2222 at Vaught Ranch Road when a car hit a motorcycle while trying to turn left across RM 2222. Austin police say that traffic was congested for longer than an hour while they and emergency services were on the scene. The female motorcyclist died while receiving treatment at University Medical Center Brackenridge.
According to authorities, every motorcyclist killed in the metro area so far in 2015 was wearing helmets except one. Texas does not require motorcyclists to wear helmets, but they are encouraged to do so because studies have shown that they reduce the likelihood of serious injuries in the event of a crash.
The spouse, children or parents who suffer the death of a loved one in a motor vehicle accident might file a wrongful death claim. This could help them recover some of the financial damages, such as funeral costs and medical bills if the loved one was hospitalized prior to passing away. They may also receive compensation for the loss of companionship and future earnings.
