GM Vehicles Recalled for Ignition Switch Problems

General Motors recently announced a recall that may affect Texas residents. The company is recalling Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts because of unsafe vehicle design.

Six people have been killed as a result of at least 22 accidents in which faulty ignition switches in the vehicles played a role, according to the recall. The Cobalts were manufactured in the years 2005-2007. The G5s are from 2007. The result of a malfunction of the defective auto part is very serious. When the vehicle is jarred or the key ring is loaded with several keys, the ignition switch malfunctions. According to the manufacturer, it can cause the driver to lose the ability to steer or brake. They suggested that the air bags may also be affected.

Experts say that due to the age of the vehicles with the defective parts, this recall is going to be costly for GM. More than 750,000 vehicles are affected by this recall, and many are on their second or third owner. GM says that while customers are waiting for the switch to be replaced, they should keep the keys on their key ring to the bare necessities.

The ignition problem is known to have played a role in six consumer deaths so far. That number, as well as the number of people injured, is believed to possibly be larger, and more incidents will likely be reported as the issue becomes more widely known. Negligent manufacturers may be held responsible for any injuries caused by their products.
