Top 6 things to do after your accident in Texas

No one plans for a car accident.

And afterwards, you may be stressed and confused about the next steps to take.

Here, we’ve provided the top six important things you should do immediately after your accident.

Top 6 things to do after your accident in Texas

1. Stop Driving

If you’ve been involved in an accident, the first thing you should do is to stop.

Driving away is not only illegal; it’s also immoral. You need to remain at the scene until medical help or state officials arrive.

2. Check if urgent medical attention is needed

Unfortunately, car accidents can cause serious injuries. And the victims could be either of the drivers, passengers, or even pedestrians.

Whether the accident was your fault or not, check yourself and other victims of the accident immediately to see if an urgent medical attention is needed.

If urgent help is required, call the medical responders, 911, or any emergency personnel you can reach first.

3. Take pictures

Once you’ve confirmed that everyone is safe or alerted emergency personnel of the accident, you need to take pictures as evidence of what happened.

Take pictures of all of the following that you can:

  • Any injuries you or your passengers sustained
  • Pictures of the accident from different angles
  • Your car
  • The other car(s)
  • Where the accident occurred

After the pictures, you can safely move your car off to the side to avoid holdup or block the lane for other drivers.

However, if you can’t safely move the car, don’t move it at all.

4. Report the case

Report the accident to the police to let them know what happened.

The police will file an accident report detailing how the accident occurred and what damage and injuries resulted from the collision.

This report can also be used as evidence by your attorney later on.

5. Exchange information

Try to exchange information with every other person that’s involved in the accident so you can contact them later.

You not only want information from the other driver involved in the accident, of course, but also witnesses on the scene who saw what happened.

You’ll want the following information:

  • Names
  • Phone numbers
  • Addresses
  • Insurance information of the other driver
  • License plate number of the other car (you can take a picture)

6. Consult a car accident attorney

If you’ve been involved in the accident, and you wish to seek compensation for the damages, make sure you contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to help you file your claim.
